A stockinette stitch is probably one of the first stitch patterns that you learned when you first started to knit and was the basis for most things that you learned after that. A stockinette stitch is one you knit the first row and purl the second row and repeat this pattern until the piece is completed. Its also know as 'knit one row, purl one row' and sometimes also called a 'stocking stitch'. The following video explains this quite clearly:
