Unsmug asked:

I've been knitting for a year now and have collected a lot of yarn that is in skeins. So far I've been unrolling it from the skein and winding a ball of yarn from them as I need them. I read an article once and the person mentioned that she used a yarn winder for doing this, but only mentioned it in passing and did not give any details.

What is a yarn winder and how do you use it? Is there anything else that you need in addition to the yarn winder?

Again, this is the most common type of yarn winder that is available. It is modestly priced and a great addition to your yarn tools. However, the yarn swift in use in this video is the Beka swift as opposed to the umbrella swift seen in the Yarn Winder and Swift Type 1 video.

Here is a video demonstration of a yarn winder and a swift. There are several types of yarn winders available, but this is the most common design and is quite affordable. Several different brands of this yarn winder design are available.

The swift in this video is the more common umbrella swift. It is of quality construction and is made of birch wood. Several sizes are available. Please look at our Yarn Winder and Swift Type 2 video for another type of swift.
